Turn and face the strange, sings David Bowie
In your world – what strange are you facing?
To be alive means to turn and face the strange - again and again.
Big ones-a-coming? Or small ones, tiptoeing inside you?
We're all aswim in change – all kinds of strange,
Over and over, in big waves and small
If you're like me you like your familiar and comfy ways of living and moving through the world. And so you often do your best to avoid or ignore those quite little waves lapping at your heels. Then there are the unavoidable giant tumbling, tossing waves that crash on you out of the blue. Unavoidable.
So, want to live a vibrant, vital life in a sea of change?
Change calls on our courage.
To fully live is to swim and flow with all kinds of change.
Best way I know? Learn how to swim with strange.
Easiest way? Get to know it. Time to...dive in!
A PRIMER ON CHANGE
Comes in two flavors:
Out-of-the-Blue. Can turn your life upside-down in a heartbeat.
Dramatic, catapulting, disorienting. Like the death or sudden illness of a loved one, an unexpected “you're fired” or “I want a divorce” kind of change....For me, the suicide of my beloved sister in her mid-30s. You get the idea! Hard. Gotcha-reeling change.
Saw-it-coming. Can be just as catapulting as Out-of-the Blue change. Only less so. 'Cause you planned it. You saw it coming. Or, you chose it. Like birth of a child. New job. Marriage. Last kid out of the nest. Retirement. ...For me? Returning to the SF bay area after more than 30 years in the northwest. All still new territory. Just maybe not as mind-blowing as Out-of-the Blue.
Sneaky change can often be ..... well, uh......just plain sneaky. Like.....Not obvious.
Sneaky change can tiptoe over our toes like a gently rising tide. Sometimes so quiet. So subtle. You hardly know it's happening. Sneaky change can bring with it a restlessness. A something's not quite right. A stuck feeling or longing for a more authentic life. Or wondering is this all there is? Easy to ignore....weeks, months, years...lifetimes. For me? The long-ago small growing whisper.....that led to my decision to leave the Northwest.
